Many years ago, when Lanelle Abueva-Fernando was just starting to learn pottery, she would make hundreds of tea cups or soup bowls a day. Her sensei, after inspecting them would only keep a few and destroy the rest.
One day she asked him what was wrong with her work. He replied, in Japanese, "life". She finally understood. It is hard to describe life in an inanimate object but once you feel the ceramics weight, texture and all the imperfections and marks that the maker leaves on the pottery, you will know what her sensei meant.
